The Bugs In Darwins Bed (Non Fiction)
Bryan Harbottle
The 'Bugs' in the title refer to Darwin's personal difficulties many of which are experienced by non-believers today. Among them were :
HIS FEAR that natural selection would be equated with other evolutionary theories involving a Creator.
HIS HORROR at the nightmare world revealed by his own theory of natural selection.
HIS VEXATION at the Bible whose every word was considered true despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
HIS FRUSTRATION at the power of the Design Argument for God while he was explaining a world without a Creator.
HIS RECOIL from the cruelty in nature that could not be equated with a loving God.
HIS SUFFERING as a blind vindictive Church hounded him for his beliefs.
HIS INDIGNATION at the Christian Doctrine of eternal damnation that sent good people who rejected Christianity to Hell.
MORE INDIGNATION at the assumption that non-believers could not be good men.
HIS IMPATIENCE with society that saw mankind's ape ancestry as degrading and made pariahs of those rejecting Adam and Eve.
HIS SORROW at the desertion of associates who could not do without their God.
